Krav Maga (pronounced Krav Ma-Gah, with the emphasis on the last syllable) is a realistic, no-nonsense self defense system that was developed in the tough and harsh environment of the modern Middle East. The system was created by the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) to provide their soldiers and personnel with a comprehensive hand-to-hand fighting system that could be learnt quickly and would deal with every conceivable situation. The system continually evolves and develops in order to keep track with the changing nature of attacks/threats and as the system seeks to become simpler and more effective/efficient.
In recent years Krav Maga has been adopted by some of the world’s leading law enforcement and military agencies (CIA, FBI, NYPD etc); it has also become the first choice system for many private security companies who work and operate in hostile environments.
Krav Maga is also a very effective and efficient system for civilians to learn/use (it is suitable for both men and women – though we do run specific women’s self defense courses in Boston, for details please click here). At the Boston Academy of Krav Maga we teach a program that is relevant and effective for the demands of the modern day-to-day life of the average individual. Our program aims to get someone ready for the street (or any other situation) quickly; this is why our beginner program (for more details of beginning Krav Maga in Boston please click here) concentrates on dealing with the most common types of attacks you’re likely to face rather than spend countless hours practicing defenses against threats and attacks your unlikely to face. In reality the types of violence you are likely to encounter will be limited to a handful of attacks and threats and it is these that you should spend your time learning how to defend against.
This is the spirit of Krav Maga: learning to deal with real world violence in the shortest possible time.
It would be wrong to look on Krav Maga training as a simple course in self-defense; it is skills, which ensure you survive, not techniques and skills need to be developed. We use a lot of games and fighting drills to develop these and most people see a dramatic improvement in their balance, general co-ordination and movement in the first few weeks of training. The longer you train the more skilled you become and the more comfortable you become in your execution of techniques. Skills also need to be kept up to date, so although Krav Maga is quick and easy to learn it is not something that can be picked up once and then dropped/forgotten. This is why our program is broken up into levels/belts. This enables you to set goals and targets and then have the satisfaction of seeing them realized. Contrary to the way Krav Maga has been marketed in the U.S. in Israel belts are worn (this is obviously not the case for Law Enforcement & Military Programs). For a description of the Boston Krav Maga levels etc please click here.
Effective self-defense is not just about physical techniques and methods it is also about understanding and identifying potentially violent situations. Much of our training is scenario and context based, so that the student can get an appreciation for the various components and dynamics present in aggressive and violent situations and respond accordingly e.g. sometimes with verbal, de-escalation and disengagement strategies as well as with physical ones where appropriate.
As well as having an adult program we also have programs designed purely for teenagers. For more details of our teenage Krav Maga programs in Boston, please click here. These classes are specifically geared towards teaching and equipping teenagers with the life skills that they will need to stay safe and protect themselves with for the very particular lifestyle that teenagers and young people have.
