It would be nice to think that real world violence could be dealt with whilst remaining calm and level headed. Unfortunately this is not the case. The body responds to danger by “adrenalizing” itself i.e. going into flight/fight mode. The stress this puts on the body is immense e.g. the heart rate is pushed towards its maximum rate and hormones that have a long-term detrimental effect on the body are released into the blood stream etc. The weaker your heart is the greater the stress put upon it. Also this process is not long-lived: it is designed to give you the physical capabilities to deal with around 15 seconds of extreme survival (after this you should have fought off your attacker or managed to run away). Adrenaline is designed for action and yet because the effect often starts when we are engaged in a pre-conflict stage (you will learn all about the various stages of violence in our classes) we have little left when the fight itself actually starts. This is where your physical fitness starts to become so important: if you haven’t the gas in the tanks to fuel your actions, everything else become superfluous.
Combat Fitness (“Cosher Kravi” in Hebrew) is an important element of our training. We don’t just get you aerobically fit, we get you fighting fit. Our fitness training is completely functional and use a combination of body-weight calisthenics (anyone who has taken part in one of the 10 minute bodyweight warm-ups we do will know the effectiveness of this way of training) and functional exercises using medicine balls, wrestling sacks and bags, resistance bands etc. If you are simply looking to lose weight and tone up we can give you this as well as vastly improved aerobic and anaerobic capabilities.
We have dedicated fitness classes that we run under the name of CQB Fitness (CQB is the military acronym meaning “Close Quarter Battle” – a form of simulated fighting). These classes last just ˝ an hour and will quickly get you to a fitness level that will put you in the top 5%. We have students in their 50’s taking these classes and men as well as women. Everything is time-based so effort and improvements are set at the personal rather than group level.
